Seed Stratification: Rose seeds require a period of cold stratification to break dormancy and germinate successfully. Place the cleaned seeds in a moistened paper towel or peat moss inside a plastic bag. Seal the bag and refrigerate it for about 8-12 weeks. This simulates winter conditions and prepares the seeds for germination. Prepare Planting Containers: Fill small pots or seed trays with a well-draining potting mix. You can use a commercial seed-starting mix or create your own by mixing equal parts of peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite. Planting Seeds: After the stratification period, remove the seeds from the refrigerator and sow them in the prepared planting containers. Plant the seeds about 1/4 inch deep in the soil and space them out evenly. Gently water the soil to ensure it's moist but not waterlogged. Provide Warmth and Light: Place the planting containers in a warm, sunny location with indirect sunlight. Ideal temperatures for germination range from 70-75°F (21-24°C). You can use a heat mat to maintain consistent warmth if needed. Ensure the seeds receive adequate light, either from a sunny windowsill or supplemental grow lights. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water the seeds gently using a spray bottle or watering can with a fine rose to avoid dislodging them. Avoid overwatering, as this can lead to fungal problems and rot. Germination: Rose seeds can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months to germinate, so be patient. Keep the soil moist and monitor the containers regularly for any signs of germination. Transplanting Seedlings: Once the seedlings have developed several true leaves and are sturdy enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots or individual containers. Use a well-draining potting mix and handle the seedlings carefully to avoid damaging their delicate roots.
