Step 1: Collecting Seeds Step1: Stratification (Cold Treatment)
Cherry blossom seeds require a period of cold stratification to break dormancy. Cleaning: Make sure the seeds are thoroughly cleaned and dried.
Scarification (optional): Lightly nick or file the hard outer shell of the seed to help water penetrate and speed up germination. Be careful not to damage the inner seed.
Cold Stratification:
Method: Place the seeds in a plastic bag with a mix of moist sand or peat moss.
Storage: Seal the bag and store it in the refrigerator at 33-41°F (1-5°C) for 10-12 weeks. Check periodically to ensure the medium remains moist but not waterlogged.
Step 3: Sowing Seeds
Soil Preparation: Use a well-draining, sterile seed-starting mix. Fill seed trays or pots with the mix.
Sowing Depth: Plant the seeds about 1/2 inch (1.3 cm) deep in the soil.
Watering: Water the soil thoroughly and keep it consistently moist but not waterlogged.
Step 4: Germination and Early Care
Light: Place the seed trays or pots in a bright location with indirect sunlight. Cherry blossom seeds need light to germinate.
Temperature: Maintain a temperature of around 70°F (21°C) for optimal germination.
Humidity: Cover the seed trays or pots with a plastic dome or plastic wrap to create a humid environment. Ventilate daily to prevent mold growth.
Germination Time: Cherry blossom seeds can take several weeks to a few months to germinate, so patience is required.
For the sake of environmental protection, the packaging of the product you receive may not contain the outer packaging bag.
