1. Choosing the Right Location
Sunlight: Marigolds thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
Soil: They prefer well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Marigolds can tolerate a range of soil types but do best in fertile, loamy soil.
2. Planting Marigold Seeds
Timing: Marigolds are sensitive to frost, so plant seeds after the last frost date in your area. In Wisconsin, this is typically around mid to late May.
Starting Indoors: For an early start, you can sow seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost date. Use seed trays or small pots filled with seed-starting mix.
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and keep the soil moist.
Place the trays in a warm area with good light.
Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves, thin them to one per pot.
Direct Sowing: If planting directly outdoors:
Prepare the soil by removing weeds and loosening it with a garden fork.
Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 6-12 inches apart, depending on the variety.
Water gently and keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which usually takes 5-10 days.
3. Caring for Marigolds
Watering: Marigolds need regular watering, especially during dry spells. Water at the base of the plants to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to fungal diseases.
Fertilizing: A balanced, all-purpose fertilizer can be applied once a month to encourage healthy growth and abundant blooms.
Thinning: Thin seedlings to 12-18 inches apart to ensure good air circulation and reduce the risk of disease.
